Huawei has become one of the most relevant consumer tech companies in the world thanks to a string of innovative smartphones, tablets and laptops. In fact, the Chinese company recently overtook Apple as the world’s second biggest smartphone manufacturer, thanks to the likes of the P20 and Mate 20 phones.

But aside from turning out eye-catching gadgets, it’s also a telecomms giant that spends 15% of its sizeable revenue each year on research and development.

The most recent project to be borne out of this is an app that harnesses Huawei’s advancements in artificial intelligence to help the millions and millions of children born each year without the ability to hear.

StorySign is, at its core, an image-recognition app that uses a specially-designed avatar to translate story books into sign language. The results of this are twofold: the app will face down learning difficulties experienced by deaf children whilst simultaneously giving parents a way to learn sign language along with their kids.
